2023 was an exceptional vintage; it’s difficult not to be excited. 2023 reminds me very much of 2016, 2009 and even 2006 to some extent. It’s a very classic, cool vintage but not cold or wet. Zinfandel expresses in unique and sometimes unfamiliar ways in these cool years, miming the earthy and briary facets of Syrah, or even the angular aspects of young Pinot Noir, more than the prosaic “ jam” or “dried fruit.” Instead, we’re treated to perfume, forest floor and red cherry on the nose. The palate shines with bright acid, fresh raspberry and briar. There are some very pretty coffee and cola notes that lift up the midpalate but the entire experience is dynamic and poignant, not soft, supple or round – as the 2022 was. The finish is pure cacao with blackberries and sandy, coarse tannins. There’s a lot of potential here. This is one to keep.
