2022 as a vintage provided yet another reminder of the risk in placing too much faith in expectations. It’s easy to forget or dismiss how complex agriculture is, especially grape-growing with its strong ties to not only tradition but also technological progress. There are just too many interconnected and highly variable relationships between sun and heat, soil and water, and vine physiology, to name a few. Despite thousands of years of history, record-keeping, and institutional knowledge, we still don’t understand them fully. We’re still regularly surprised.
There were certainly some challenges in 2022 as a heat wave materialized into harvest. At the time, no one knew what would result. That scenario could be both exhilarating and terrifying, depending on perspective. In true Montelena form, it became a source of inspiration for us: a unique opportunity for expression in our wines. And while no one could have predicted the nature of that expression, we’re very happy that we decided to ride the wave instead of futilely trying to avoid it.
