The 2021 vintage will be defined by concentration and ripeness in the wines, pleasant results from an unfortunate drought. That said, the weather perfectly cooperated given the dry year with moderate but not extreme heat during the summer and consistently cool evenings.

The nose is fresh and lively, exuding California ripeness and opulence. Peach, melon and lavender leap from the glass along with lemon blossom and lime leaf. There is undoubtedly grapefruit buried below as well as some cut grass, but the flowers and stone fruit are really the stars of this wine.

This wine is the product of an opportunity and the willingness to try something completely new. And while it’s been hailed as an “overnight success” in style, substance, and in how quickly it sells out, this sensational wine took a full decade to realize and continues to be reinvented each year. Great things come from humble beginnings. That’s truly the story of Chateau Montelena as well as this Sauvignon Blanc.
