2014 Jade Lake Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc
Sometimes life is just about a delicious glass of wine, great company, and an amazing evening with no pretense. That is how we approached the winemaking process of our Jade Lake Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc: balancing the acid and sugar without any cloying character but retaining richness and body.
Nose The nose opens with ripe fig, orange blossom, and honeysuckle. Hidden among these and slowly evolving are just a hint of vanilla, fresh cut grass, and grapefruit rind.
Palate The dynamic interplay of sugar and acid is bolstered by lemon drops and candied orange, while the subtle notes of toasty oak and caramel temper the inherent sweetness. Rather than being an incredibly viscous wine, instead the richness comes through via the diversity of flavors and textures, some from the variety and some from the cellar.
Finish The finish is long and lush without being syrupy sweet but bolstered by waves of butterscotch, apple pie, and creme brulee.
It shouldn't surprise anyone that we don't grow our fruit in Sauternes or any of the other regions famous for consistent production of dessert wine. Instead, we look to the vintage to give us clues as to the potential for a late harvest. With moderate weather and consistent fog, we spied the requisite conditions in 2014 and decided to go for it. With meticulous canopy work and harsh scrutiny by our vineyard team, we were able to create this highly quaffable and food-friendly dessert wine.
