1982 Alexander Valley Chardonnay

1982 …a white wine vintage of excitement and difficulty. Dicey weather conditions during the long growing season once again proved the old adage – ‘‘fine winemaking begins in the vineyard”. Close scrutiny and repetitive thinning to restrict the potentially large crop and control the possibility of botrytis proved to be of utmost importance to the quality of the wines made that year. In the case of our 1982 “Alexander Valley” Chardonnay, the extra diligence and care has resulted in a wine of terrific flavor and intensity.

Another interesting facet of this wine, only our second 100% Alexander Valley Chardonnay, is the additional of a unique vineyard high on the eastern hills. It comprises one third of the total blend, adding exceptional depth and dimension only rarely found in wines from that area.

vintage weather

Cool. Wet winter, cool spring. Record crop, thinned 5 times to lower the yield. Mid-September rains caused some problems, but we finished picking before major storms in October. Big wines, clean, fat and juicy berries.

tasting notes

In the glass the wine shows an intense bright yellow-gold color immediately indicating great body and depth. The aroma is primarily one of pure Chardonnay with slight hints of tropical fruit and spice with the richness imparted by a kiss of oak. Supple and forward varietal flavors reminiscent of green apples give way to a spicy Alexander Valley finish with the signature of Chateau Montelena style and finesse. It will taste best at cellar temperature, or only very slightly chilled and will continue to improve with further bottle aging.
