1992 Montelena Estate Zinfandel

1992 was notable for having just about every kind of weather during the vintage. For Zinfandel, one of the most important periods during the vintage is the six weeks of ripening which pretty much determines what kind of wine we’ll have. In 1992, daytime high temperatures in the vineyard hovered around 100 degrees during the day with consistently cold nights below 60 degrees. This made for strong berry flavor development without excessive raisining or stress to the grapes.

Our conservative farming practices also contributed to the successful growing season as we removed about one ton per acre from the vines. In late summer, we took off the non-colored bunches that delayed ripening, so we experienced even ripening and great quality. Happily, we ended up with another great year for the Zinfandel, and during the entire life of the wine in the cellar, we have had very high expectations.

vintage weather

Temperate Consistent. Low rainfall, with classic warm days and cool nights throughout the season. Harvest started a little earlier then normal. Cooling trend after Labor Day allowed for more hang time and strong flavor development.

tasting notes

It has a good, dark, ruby color and shows density in the glass. The nose is driven by the distinctive characteristics of Calistoga Zinfandel?smoky berry, cherry and brambles, like blackberry vines in the hot sun. On the palate, it has very full fruit flavors with a slight softening in the middle and great persistence through the finish. Many of the "spicy" flavors Zinfandel aficionados enjoy are present here. The thing I like best about the 1992 Montelena Estate Zinfandel is the way that the powerful aromas and flavors are carried in a moderate weight wine with smooth roundness…in short, its power and finesse. We'll be enjoying this wine with a wide range of flavor-intense foods.
