1978 Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Since the renaissance of Montelena we have steadfastly worked towards making an outstanding Cabernet, grown, produced, and bottled at the Chateau. It is especially momentous that the release of our first estate bottling coincides not only with our 100th anniversary as a winery and our 10th year of operation as a modern facility, but also the realization of placing the right grape in the right place and the occurrence of those happy circumstances required to make an exemplary wine exclusively from the estate’s vineyards.

Vintage '78 ended in a heat wave that sent grape sugars up from 23º to 25º Brix in two days; too fast to cause overripening but resulting in super maturity.

vintage weather

Temperate Consistent. Good winter rains. Long and warm growing season. Late heat led to a somewhat compressed harvest. High extract and body with well-balanced fruit.

tasting notes

This wine is a marriage of a "big" vintage with Montelena's traditional style and displays an intense Cabernet aroma of berry and cassis along with a bouquet of cedary elegance brought about through 3 full years of cellaring. Youthful at this state, it possesses a depth of flavor that can only be derived from perfectly ripened Cabernet grapes. The flavors rise then fade to linger on like the history of a hundred years, to which we dedicate our first estate-bottled Cabernet Sauvignon.
