vintage weather

Hot. Coolest growing season on record, but heat wave at crush ripened grapes nicely. Intense, well-balanced fruit. Great potential on these wines.

tasting notes

Right from the start this wine has had elegance and depth surpassing any estate wines made to date. Enhanced by a distinctive deep-red garnet color and the unique earthy-berry nose of "Montelena Character", it is developing into one of our finest Cabernets yet. While the optimum enjoyment of this wine will be left to those who are patient enough to give it 5 to 20 years of aging, its finely balanced structure will make it surprisingly enjoyable even in its youth. Over two years in our "solera" of new and old French Nevers oak barrels and a year in the bottle has softened the big fruit flavors into a rich lingering finish, that, to us, signifies the end of our four years of careful nurturing, guidance, and effort. Thus we proudly release our 1980 Estate-Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon.
