2013 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
“Early.” Early seems to sum it up for the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc. We had a warm and dry spring with record low rainfall totals for 2013 in California, which lead to an earlier than normal budbreak. A nice even, fairly mild summer carried the “early” trend into the fall. Harvest began in late August, about a week and a half earlier than normal, but on schedule given the early budbreak. The great ripening weather held into September leading to an early (welcome) finish to the harvest.
On the winemaking side, we made some changes to the styling of this wine in 2013. We chose to emphasize the fresh, crisp California fruit while bringing in more depth, weight and structure to really complete the package. Staying true to the “early 2013 trend, we bottled this wine early in order to better position it for summertime sipping.
The 2013 Montelena Sauvignon Blanc is brilliant and pale gold in
color with aromas of honey, orange blossom, warm oak, and
caramelized bananas. On the palate, this wine is fresh and
clean with a wonderfully juicy mouthfeel and complexity
throughout. The acidity is firm but not tart. This
Sauvignon Blanc is loaded with bright citrus, tropical starfruit,
and a rich, slightly spicy finish with a touch of Meyer lemon
