2016 Jade Lake Series - Second Collection
JADE LAKE SERIES - pt. 2 of 3
One of the most prominent features of the Chateau Montelena Estate is Jade Lake. Built by Yort Wing Frank and his wife Jeanie in 1958, the lake features two islands connected by crooked bridges. The islands are adorned with six-sided red Chinese pavilions that look out over the 11 acre lake; their rooflines are highlighted by six mythical creatures inspired from a design at the Palace of Harmony in the Forbidden City in Beijing. In this collection, we highlight creatures three and four from our roofline: the Mythical Lion and the Phoenix.
By the end of the nineteenth century, Charbono was simply prolific in the Napa Valley, long before Cabernet became king. Today there are fewer than 100 acres planted in all of California. This wine is at first savory and earthy with notes of cinnamon, black olive, tobacco, and bacon fat. With another swirl come aromas of cocoa, toast, dried cherry and fruit leather. Red raspberry and a firm acid backbone underlie a dynamic profile of black plum, espresso, fresh fig and strawberry jam. The tannins are chalky and angular, helping to bridge the ripe, lingering finish with touches of mint, hazelnut, and molasses.
Albariño: What's not to love? Inherently aromatic, food-friendly, and traditionally well-balanced, it perfectly fits our ethos. Originally thought to be a clone of Riesling, Albariño is most famously grown in Rias Baixas, Spain. In California, our fruit was grown on the windy flats of the San Joaquin Delta. Aromas of perfume, fresh flowers, ripe melon, and grapefruit are intermingled with hints of lavender and lemon blossom. The palate is initially spicy with notes of ginger, clove, and lemongrass that slowly fade into a cool, stony minerality. Orange zest and lemon curd define the finish along with a firm punch of bright acidity.
