Chateau Montelena Winery Announces Green Recognition and Launch of New Estate Packaging

January 7, 2018

(CALISTOGA, CA) - At Chateau Montelena Winery, sustainability is not merely a goal or initiative, it is an integral part of our DNA. Since the rebirth of Chateau Montelena Winery by Jim Barrett in the early 1970s, commitment to the earth has been paramount to the Montelena way of life. Therefore, we are pleased to announce our recognition as a 2017 Certified Napa County Green Business.

“Receiving this special award represents our decades-long tradition of preserving our greatest asset—our Estate Vineyard. From the beginning, we recognized the importance of maintaining a vibrant and healthy ecosystem in our vineyards through our farming practices. Since then, the winery has extended stewardship to all aspects of the business through numerous large and small scale projects. Sustainability guides how we farm, what we purchase, how we handle waste, how we market our wines, and how we operate. Sustainability is at the heart of what we do and who we are," notes Master Winemaker Bo Barrett. “This recognition from our peers follows previous designation of our vineyard farming practices as both Napa Green Certified and Fish Friendly. Not only are our sustainability practices important in creating a quality, natural product, these carefully executed steps will ensure that we can continue to do so for generations.”

In the spirit of this philosophy, Chateau Montelena's green efforts will take another leap forward with the introduction of its new Estate Packaging for CellarMasters who receive annual shipments of Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. "A critical aspect of our sustainability goal is to consistently increase the quality of everything we make,” states Winemaker Matt Crafton. “With that in mind, we’ve spent the last two years redesigning our Estate Packaging from the ground up.” Beginning this March with the 2014 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, CellarMaster Futures orders will now ship in custom packaging designed to provide a more functional, enjoyable unboxing experience while improving bottle protection in transit. "We are very excited about this new packaging. There isn’t anything else like it in the market. Not only does it complement our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, it also takes a bite out of our carbon footprint, which is a significant challenge when it comes to packaging. The new format also includes a few special touches such as a vineyard map and detailed vintage notes—a convenient wealth of information when enjoying a bottle. Each individual bottle is housed in its own vintage-specific box within the main packaging, serving as the perfect container to showcase the wine when bringing along to a dinner party, a restaurant, or as a gift."

Jim Barrett often referred to the Montelena team as custodians of the earth—ensuring a balance of making great wine while simultaneously safeguarding our special plot of land for future generations. This new green recognition, combined with the launch of our newly-designed Estate Packaging, serve as important facets in continuing this tradition.
